Note* | after 12 November 1895 | He *There is some doubt as to where J. J. Getty was born. The family bible has Madison County, New York, and various published articles either agree or disagree. The bible entry was apparently filled in by a later hand. Sauk Centre Herald - John Jerome Getty Dead In the death of J. J. Getty, which occurred on Tuesday morning at 8:30 o'clock, another old settler and well known inhabitant of Stearns county, has passed to the Great Beyond. He was born in Madison county, New York State, in 1821, and in 1854 removed to Minneapolis, where he married Miss Permelia Jane Layman, who, with two daughters, both married, survive him, and were with him during his last illness. In August, 1857, he removed to this county, purchased a farm in the town which bears his name, Getty, and there resided until the Indian outbreak, when he took his family to Minneapolis, but only remained until 1866. He again returned to his country home and there peacefully, prosperously and diligently pursued his work until about three years ago. Old age was creeping on, and farm life became too hard, so he disposed of his farm and bought a piece of property here, where he has since resided. During his early life here he made many trips to the Twin Cities, returning with the household goods of the early settlers. A man of genial disposition, with an ear ever turned to the cry of distress and a purse always open to the call of charity, he made and retained friends on all sides. Though he was never an aspirant for honors, he had served his district as county commissioner for six years, was for many years treasurer of the township of Getty, and for a long time chairman of the board of supervisors. Those who knew him best recognized in him those sterling qualities that win esteem and respect. Though not a member of any religious body, his life was marked by many charitable deeds, and his life motto has ever been to do unto others as he would have them do to him. The funeral services will be held today at two o'clock p. m. from the G. A. R. hall. To the bereaved family this community and county join in extending condolences. In our next issue we will give an obituary notice to be written by one of his friends, which time prevents publishing this issue. [The next issue did not have the said obituary] Sauk Centre Herald 12 Nov 1895 At Rest. The community was not prepared for the announcement on Tuesday of the death of J. J. Getty, and the grief expressed by our citizens was generally was as sincere as the surprise. Indeed, few knew that he was sick. He passed away as peaceably as he lived – honored and respected by all who knew him. John Jerome Getty was a notable man. A kinder heart never had human tenancy. Simple and unaffected in his manner and bearing, yet he was a man of great force of character, had independent and clearly defined ideas and opinions, but an inbred delicacy forbade his giving them offensive expression. For six years he served this county on the board of commissioners, and from time immemorial he held offices of trust for which he was eminently qualified, kind and courteous, his innate disposition made him the true gentleman. In every relation of life he was a man to inspire confidence. As husband, father, neighbor and citizen he was faithful, gentle and conscientious, while his death falls with heaviest hand upon his bereaved wife and children yet his friends and neighbors feel a deep personal loss. Mr. Getty was born of sturdy Scotch-Irish parentage in new York on September 15th, 1821, and spent his boyhood in that state. For a time he was a driver on the Erie Canal. In his early manhood he removed to Galva, Ill., where he was first married, his wife dying without issue. In October 1854 he married Miss Permelia Jane Layman, and three years afterward came to Minnesota, stopping a short time in Minneapolis, but pushing his way to the frontier with his brave young wife, who survives him. In 1862 he returned to Minneapolis, on account of the Sioux outbreak, and remained there four years, renting his homestead at Getty's grove. Since that time he has been a resident of Getty township up until four years ago, when he sold his farm and removed to this city, spending the closing years of a busy and vigorous life in well earned ease. He leaves two children – Mrs. Geo. Duncan of West Union and Mrs. Maggie Babcock of Worthington. The world is poorer indeed when such men leave it. Brimfield (Illinois) News, Dec. 12, 1895: Many of the old citizens of Brimfield will be pained to learn of the death of John Jerome Getty, of Sauk Centre, Minn. John Jerome Getty was born Sept. 15th, 1821 in Onondaga county New York. In his early manhood he removed to Brimfield, Ill. Where he was first married to Carolina Burt, his wife dying without issue. On October 31st, 1854, he married Miss Pamelia [sic- Permelia] Jane Layman, and three years afterward went to Minnesota, stopping a short time in Minneapolis, but pushing his way to the frontier, with his brave young wife, who survives him. In 1862 he returned to Minneapolis on account of the Sioux outbreak, remaining there four years, renting his farm in Getty's Grove, in the township of Getty which was named in his honor. In 1891 he sold his farm purchasing a comfortable home in Sauk Centre, where a little over a year ago his health began to fail him and on October 31st, the 41st anniversary of his marriage, he was stricken to the floor by a stroke of paralysis of the spinal cord from which he never rallied. He did not realize his suffering as his mind wandered most of the time. He peacefully breathed his last Nov. 12, 1895, at 8:30 a.m. "His life work is done, he now rests from his labors and his works do follow him." His wife and two children, Mrs. Geo. Duncan of West Union, and Mrs. Margaret Babcock, of Worthington, Minn. survive him. History of the Upper Mississippi Valley (1881): John Jerome Getty, the first settler of the town that bears his name, was born on Onondaga county, New York, on the 15th of September, 1821. His father was one of the pioneers of the county of his birthplace. Mr. Getty, though living on a farm all his life, has found time to read and accumulate a store of knowledge, making him one of the most affable and genial men of the town. He lost his mother by death when quite young, and his father brought into the household a step-mother, so that at the age of eight years he left home and began to work on the Erie canal, and continued that occupation until about twenty-two years of age, when he came west. In 1843, he opened a new farm in Peoria county, Illinois, where he lived ten years. In 1853, he came to Minnesota, and spent about one year on the present site of Minneapolis, in the employ of Martin Layman, as a helper on the farm, and on the 31st of October, 1854, was married to Miss J. Layman, and immediately returned to his farm in Illinois, where he lived until 1857, when he returned to Minnesota. During the same year, took a farm in section nineteen, Getty Township, where he still resides. During the war, the family lived in Minneapolis for about four years. He filled a number of offices, in the county and town. He has two children: Fannie E., and Margaret A. after 12 November 1895 at OBIT--Findagrave Write-Up.1 |

Article that appeared in the mid 1870's: In response to invitation on last evening to the beautiful residence and plantation of Mr. Charles Getty and brother, two northern gentlemen who but a few years ago came into our midst. The appearance of the dwelling as viewed from the Decatur Road defies all description. The beautiful flower yard and lawn in front being splendidly illuminated indicating in unmistakable terms the refined taste of the excellent Mrs. Getty who has completely won the hearts of all her Southern acquaintances. She was aided by her intellectual and cultured grandaughters Mrs. Ensley and Miss Wingate who are now visiting her. The Getty house was that built for John C. Featherston on the Decatur Road (which in recent times became the Athens Country Club). In 1883 Dorothy Getty was listed as a (widow) pensioner of the War of 1812, from June 1880.
