Note Hulda Marie Fehr Hulda Marie (Fehr) Wirtz, 103, was born March 15, 1912 at West Bend, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Mary Gerber Fehr. She passed away February 12, 2016 at Algona, Iowa. Hulda was raised on the family farm in Kossuth County, along with her brothers, Henry, Paul, Eli and Elmer. A younger brother, Daniel, died in infancy.

Hulda attended country school through the eighth grade. In her youth, she worked at various jobs in the West Bend area, and for a time was a housekeeper in Peoria, Illinois. As a young woman, she became a member of the Apostolic Christian Church at West Bend.

She married Fred Wirtz at West Bend on May 24, 1936 and they farmed near West Bend for 41 years. Their home was blessed with ten children, five boys and five girls. She enjoyed gardening, baking, and family music and appreciated time spent visiting with family and friends. Hulda had a special gift for making each child and grandchild feel loved and valued.

Her surviving children are: Mary (Ted Besch) of Storm Lake, Iowa, Esther (Lester Frieden) of rural West Bend, John (Ella) of Fort Dodge, IA, Eli (Marilyn) of Urbandale, IA, Alvin (Wendy) of Wylie, TX, Lori (Frank Jones) of Gold Canyon, AZ, Luanne (Chuck Collins) of Plano, TX, Irene (Alan Blair) of Humboldt, IA, and Fred Wirtz, Jr. (friend Lila Smith) of West Bend. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Peggy Perkins Wirtz of Belmond, IA, her sister-in-law, Betty Wirtz of West Bend, IA and a special cousin, Madeline Gerber Banwart.

At the time of her death, Hulda had 26 living grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Wirtz; a son, Aaron; a daughter-in-law, Patsy Banwart Wirtz; a grandson, James Wirtz; and her parents and brothers, listed above. at OBIT.1

Ken was born September 8, 1937, in Ayrshire, Iowa, to the late George and Ruth (Myers) Finnegan. He graduated Ruthven, IA, High School in 1956, Buena Vista College in 1961 and earned his MSE from Drake University in 1968. Ken married Nancy Edwards on August 3, 1961, in Cherokee, Iowa. They were blessed with nine children. Ken was an educator and served as elementary principal for Oakland, Iowa Community Schools for 20 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bellevue, NE.

In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by a grandson, William F. Carolus; four brothers, Tom, Jim, Dan and Phillip Finnegan; sisters-in-law, Doris, Alice, Margie and Jane; brothers-in-law, Gary and Marvin Edwards and Duane Pitcher.

Ken is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Finnegan of Bellevue, NE; daughters, Debbie (Jude) Holzer of Council Bluffs, IA, Julie (Scott) Kowal of Omaha, NE, Amy (Bryan) Carolus of Treynor, IA; sons, Joe (Julie) Finnegan of Elkhorn, NE, Tony Finnegan of Council Bluffs, Doug (Christine) Finnegan of New Lenox, IL, Pat (Gabriela) Finnegan of Adel, IA, Jon (Carie) Finnegan of Glenwood, IA, Matt (Heidi) Finnegan of Council Bluffs; 29 grandchildren; 11 siblings; many nieces and nephews.

Gary Russell Edwards, 73, of Mechanicsville, MD, formerly of Byron, GA died June 5, 2010 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.

Born June 29, 1936 in West Bend, Iowa, he was the son of Vernon Russell Edwards and Lydia Marie Wirtz.

Mr. Edwards played guitar and played in a band called Range Riders. He loved watching birds, nature and all animals, especially his most beloved and devoted dog, Gidget.

Besides his parents, Mr. Edwards was predeceased by a son, Michael J. Edwards who died in 1983.

He is survived by his children, Michelle Langley (Ray) of Mechanicsville, MD, Belinda Edwards of FL, Shawn Edwards (Wilma) of FL and Joseph Spiekermeier (Beth) of Hamilton, IL.

As well as his grandchildren, Keri Gray (Jesse), Megan McGreal, Tracey Edwards, Shawn Edwards, Jr., Hailey Spiekermeier and Jaiden Spiekermeier; great grandchild, Gabriella Gray.

Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Janet Webster (Wayne) of West DeMoines, IA, Nancy Finnegan(Ken) of Oakland, IA, Donna Nims (Gene) of Grayslake, IL, Sandra Martin of Fortson, GA, Dale Edwards of Perry, GA, Diane Feldpausch of Louisville, KY, Susan Carstenson (Ron) of DeWitt, IA and Marvin Edwards (Julene) of Yankton, SD.

Marvin L. Edwards was born on May 3, 1950 in Fort Dodge, IA to Russell and Lydia (Wirtz) Edwards. Marvin grew up in Ruthven, IA and graduated from the Ruthven High School. He then attended the University of Iowa where he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting.

After graduating from college, Marvin worked in Spencer, IA for a time. In the early 1980's, he began his career with Prince Manufacturing in Sioux City, IA as a purchasing agent. He was currently the plant manager of Lewis and Clark Hydraulics in Yankton, SD.

Marvin was an avid Green Bay Packer and Iowa Hawkeye football fan. Even though they would beat him at the game, he enjoyed playing golf with his two sons. Above all, Marvin enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 17 years, Julene; his two sons, Jeremy Edwards, Grand Rapids, MI, Brian Edwards and his wife, Kristin, Zeeland, MI; three grandchildren and a grandchild on the way; six siblings; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gary Edwards after 17 January 2012 at OBIT.1

Beverly Ann (Schutjer) Wirtz, daughter of Henry and Ella (Jacobson) Schutjer, was born on January 11, 1932 in Britt, Iowa. After attending schools in Britt she worked at First State Bank in Britt.



On April 2, 1951 she married Paul Wirtz at the Evangelical Free Church in Britt. They farmed for four years in Ottosen, Iowa and twelve years at Britt. She worked at Marting Manufacturing in Britt for many years as bookkeeper.



Beverly retired in 1995 at which time she enjoyed quilting and gardening. She loved her family and made quilts and afghans for special events, warming them as well as their hearts.



Beverly attended both the Upper Flat Evangelical Free and Britt Evangelical Free Churches. She was active in helping with the Awana’s and the Women’s Circle for funeral lunches.



Beverly is survived by a daughter, Vicki Ibarra and husband Hector of Iowa City; two grandsons: Bret Ibarra of Houston, Texas and Derek Ibarra of Iowa City; two brothers: Donald Schutjer of Apple Valley, Minnesota and Richard Schutjer and wife Judy of Hazel Green, Wisconsin.



She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Mark Wirtz in August 1984; and her husband, Paul Wirtz in April 1998.



In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Britt Evangelical Free Church Benevolent Fund and/or Iowa City Hospice. after 5 December 2008 at OBIT.1

Alena B. Nelson, 84, passed away at Marian West Hospital in Santa Maria, CA on August 28, 2003. She was born on May 6, 1919 in Newman Grove, Nebraska.

She lived on the family farm in Newman Grove until her graduation from Newman Grove High School in 1938. After graduation, Alena moved to Stockton, CA, to marry her high school sweetheart, Arthur E. Nelson, former co-owner of the Port Stockton Nursery. During World War II, Alena worked for Western Union in Stockton while Art served in the Army. She later worked as executive secretary at The Stockton Record. After completing her AA degree at Delta Junior College, she began her many years of faithful service to Calvary Baptist Church, now known as The Bridge. She was a devoted church secretary and school librarian, always an active and caring member of Calvary Baptist. Alena loved to read, paint and travel. She also loved to write, keeping many diaries and journals to record her active life. She loved and cared for animals as well, especially her cats.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Arthur E. Nelson. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Rustin Pearson and husband, Howard of Santa Maria; nieces, Suzanne Hajnik and husband, Frank of Santa Maria and Sandra Buchanan, and husband, Rob of Santa Maria and their families; as well as many members of the Nelson family in Stockton. For the past two years, she was a resident of Arbor View Retirement Community in Santa Maria, where she enjoyed a life of loving care among many friends.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. in Evergreen Chapel of Cherokee Memorial Cemetery in Lodi, CA. Arrangements are in the care of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home, 600 E. Stowell Road, Santa Maria. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of your choice. Magner-Maloney Funeral Home.
